Competition Rules and Regulations

of the Future Heroes Science Competition

 

1. DENOMINATION AND ORGANIZER OF THE COMPETITION

1.1 Denomination of the Competition: Future Heroes Science Competition
(hereinafter called ”Competition”).

2. PERIOD OF THE COMPETITION

3. PARTICIPATION

3.1. Participation in the Competition is free, there is no entry fee.

3.2. Only Teams are allowed to take part in the Competition.

3.2.1. A Team consists of minimum 2 (two), maximum 5 (five) persons (hereinafter called "Team Member").

3.2.2. Team Member can be any legally competent natural person over 14 but under 18 years of age, who is a full-time high school or secondary school student, and who is resident or domiciled in the following country: Please write here your country’s name.

3.2.3. Each Team has to be supervised by a secondary school or high school teacher (hereinafter called "Team Leader"). Team Leader is not a Team Member.

3.2.4. Students, who, are selected by Team Leader, will officially take part in the Competition. Other students can help Team in the background, but they are not officially participating in the Competition and are not eligible for any prizes.

3.2.5. Team Leader shall undertake to co-ordinate with Team Members during the preparation and construction period of the Competition, and to fill in the online Entry form and do the necessary administrative tasks on behalf of Team.

3.3. More Teams of the same school are allowed to enter for the Competition, but in this case Team Leader and Team Members are not allowed to be part of more Teams.

4. RULES

4.1. The Team’s task is to solve an everyday problem related to sustainability using scientific methods.

4.1.1 We expect student teams to solve one of the following problems related to sustainability:

A) Energy

Does your school use too much energy? Reduce the electricity use by saving energy, search for sustainable lighting solutions and introduce renewable energy sources!

B) Water

Do you also disagree with wasting water? Take action against it! Find out how much water is used in your school and how it could be reduced. Get familiar with biological water treatment methods and reuse water.

C) Garbage

Does your school produce a lot of waste? Does the waste end up in the trash without being selected? Introduce selective waste collection and find out a chemical method which can be used to recycle a part of the garbage.

D) Plants

Do you think that there is not enough green space and parks in and around your school? Then it’s time to go green! Make creative solutions, with which you significantly increase the green space in your school, which can be in the classrooms, in the yard or even on the walls. Use biologically self-sustaining solutions.

E) Transport

Do you prefer to breathe clean, fresh air near your school? Then find out smart community solutions that will reduce air pollution from traffic! Use the latest alternative transport solutions offered by science.

F) Eating

Are you bored with school canteen or cafeteria food? Or do you think that could be healthier? Reform students’ eating habits! Grow vegetables and edible plants in the school, or, in order to show the latest scientific innovations, present innovative specialties, which are nutritious and healthy.

G) Own problem

Did you find other problems related to sustainability that your team want to solve? No problem. You can also enter the competition if your choice is not one of the problems mentioned above, but you chose your own one and you solve it using scientific methods.

4.1.2. Teams can use scientific articles from Sustainable Handbook to help them select the topic and solve the problem, and they can also free to use other educational materials and supplies, such as:

  • Accessories and materials found in the school's chemistry and physics lab
  • Everyday objects brought from home (e.g. trash can, aquarium, etc.)
  • Homemade things (e.g. objects made from cardboard, hand-painted decorations, etc.)
  • Recyclable materials (e.g. empty PET bottles, cans, newspapers, etc.)

4.1.3. Educational materials helping the preparation of Teams are available for team leader teachers and can be downloaded freely on the http://www.chemgeneration.com.

4.2. Requirements of the developed solution related to sustainability (hereinafter called "Project"):

Sustainability

Teams have to develop a solution to a locally existing problem which promotes sustainability, meaning that it is energy-saving, environmentally friendly etc. The more the completed projects contribute to increase sustainability, the more points you get.

Implementation and feasibility

The jury evaluates not only the idea, but the implementation as well. Plan a sustainable solution that you are able to implement the best possible way. At the competition, we basically expect finished and completed projects, but in such a case, when the implementation is not possible for you, for instance because of the cost or time that your project requires, it is also possible to develop your idea in theory that you present through an example, for instance using a mock-up.

Scientific background

It is important that student teams implement sustainable solutions that are scientifically justified. The chosen problem can be solved in many ways at the same time. For example you can simply change attitudes (such as school students save water in the school), but a very important rule of the competition is that you also have to apply or plan at least one scientific solution into your project (for instance build a biological water purification system).

Tangible product

Try to include tangible objects, equipment or mock-ups to your sustainable solution in a creative way. A project can be much more impressive, if it exist not only on the paper in theory, but contains spectacular elements that you prepared with your own hands. It can be a variety of things such as greenhouse made of plastic bottles, selective containers made from recycled materials, or even decorations that prove your commitments towards the school’s environment.

Documentation and presentation

Submitted applications have to include the exploration of the problem, the planned solutions and the implementation. You can use subtitles or textual explanations, the only point is to present your project’s main point, the scientific background and the solution clearly.

Community impact

A really good idea activates many people. Invite as many students as you can to actively participate in the implementation of your sustainable solution. You can plant together, organize water saving day, or other community programs. From now on, every school student should behave in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable way that you need to show and describe in your project.

Accepted in the Projects:

  • Use of electricity
  • Use of chemicals – only under the supervision of Team Leader, using the appropriate protective equipment

Not accepted in the Projects:

  • Hazardous materials
  • Use of live animals
  • Use of profane, indecent, or lewd expressions

4.3 Teams can apply to the competition by fulfilling the online Entry form and sending the Video or Presentation introducing their Project.

4.3.1 Requirements for the Video of Presentation submitted to the Competition:

Video/Presentation contents. The Video/Presentation needs to present the Project. It is important to include the task’s phases of the solution which means that Teams need to document their acts during the analyzing and implementing period.

Theoretical presentation. The Video/Presentation should include a theoretical demonstration. In order to explain the Project better, Team can use subtitles, graphics, narration, etc.

Sources. At the end of the Video/Presentation, source materials, literature, and other support used in the course of the project must be written (e.g. source of statistical data, research and professional source materials needed to solve the problem etc.).

Length of the Video/Presentation. The minimum and maximum length is not limited. However, an effort should be made to make it interesting and busy during the whole time.

Video format. The following Video file formats are accepted: MOV, MPG, WMV, 3GP

Presentation format. The following Presentation formats are accepted PPTX, PPS, MOV, MPG, WMV

File size: The maximum size of the Video/Presentation file submitted to the Competition: 500 MB

Filename: The file submitted to the Competition must contain the nickname of Team making the Video/Presentation (e.g.: funny_atoms_team.mov, etc.). The filename shall not contain spaces or special characters. Please use dash (-) and underscore (_) characters for separating the words in the filename.

Background music: Incidental music is only allowed to use in the Video if Team uses its own song, and/or have written permission to use the copyrighted material.

5. ENTRY

5.1. Entries for the Competition are accepted from the following date and time: vary from country to country. Please check the local websites!

5.3. Entry for the Competition consists of the two following steps:

5.3.1. Team Leader shall fill in the online Entry form found on the http://www.chemgeneration.com/futureheroes/ website until the deadline by giving the following obligatory data: Name of the school, Address of the school, Nickname of the team, Name of the Team Leader, E-mail address of the Team Leader, Team members (full names of students), short explanation of Project.

5.3.2. Team Leader shall send the Video or Presentation file until the deadline using the http://www.wetransfer.com free file sending system to the following address: vary from country to country. Please check the local websites!

5.4. By filling in the online Entry form, Team Leader and Team Members agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of this Competition Rules and Regulations (hereinafter called ”Rules and Regulations”). Team Leader and Team Members with the adoption of this Rules and Regulations agrees that Organizer handles and stores data of Team Leader provided at registration and uses them for own marketing purposes.

5.5. All the entries and Videos/Presentations received will be checked by Organizer who will inform Team Leader whether all the submitted application materials have arrived. If Team Leader does not get any feedback by e-mail within 2 (two) working days after Team Leader has submitted the application, Team Leader has to contact Organizer on the following address: countryname@chemgeneration.com.

5.6. By submitting a Video/Presentation, each Team Leader, on behalf of him- or herself and of his or her Team, hereby grants permission for the Video/Presentation to be used in whole or in part by Organizer for any commercial or advertising purpose in any and all languages and media, and to be posted on the Website or other websites, and to be used in press materials, without further authorization of Team Leader, Team, or any third party, and without payment.

5.7. One Team Member can exclusively take part in the Competition as a member of one single Team. In case of multiple registrations, Organizer is entitled to exclude Team Member from the Competition.

5.8. One Team Leader can exclusively take part in the Competition as a leader of one single Team. In case of multiple registrations, Organizer is entitled to exclude Team Leader and his/her Team from the Competition.

5.9. Organizer solely regards registration as valid, if Team Leader provides his/her real, own e-mail address. Organizer is entitled to exclude Team Leader and his/her Team registering with false or inaccurate information from the Competition.

5.10. Organizer reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any submission at any time in the event, it is determined that the submission is offensive, inappropriate, or it is determined that Team has not otherwise complied with these Rules and Regulations.

5.11. Each Team agrees that Organizer is not responsible for any unauthorized use of Videos/Presentations by third parties. Organizer does not guarantee the posting of any Video/Presentation.

5.12. Copyrights of Videos and Presentations submitted to the competition entirely belong to Team members. At the same time, each Team member gives the right to Organizer to freely reproduce and present the Project and Team members participating in the Project without limitation, on a global scale, during the promotion and advertising of the Competition.

6. JURY AND SELECTION OF WINNERS

6.1. Videos/Presentations sent for the Competition will be judged by a professional jury. (Hereinafter called ”Jury”)

6.1.1. Members of Jury:

Members of the Jury shall be professionals of the scientific field who are representatives of higher education institutions, professional organizations and associations.

6.1.2. Jury will make the decision until the following date: vary from country to country. Please check the local websites!

6.1.3. The Jury evaluates and gives points to Team Projects on the basis of the criteria described in section 4.2.

7. AWARDS

7.1. According to the judgement, the Project getting the most points will win the First Award (hereinafter called ”First Award”).

7.1.1. Jury decides in its sole discretion on the First Award. The decision can not be questioned, Teams and Organizer accept it as a fact.

7.2. All Videos and Presentations will be uploaded to a video gallery on the Website by Organizer, and the public can vote for them. The Video/Presentation having the most votes will win the Audience Award (hereinafter called ”Audience Award”).

7.2.1. The online public voting period of the Audience Award is: vary from country to country. Please check the local websites!

7.2.2. During public voting, Organizer accepts only 1 (one) vote from 1 (one) IP address within 24 hours.

7.3. Announcement of results: Please write here the date of the announcement of results (on the website).

8. PRIZES

8.1. Each Team Member and the Team Leader of the Team (hereinafter called ”Winner Team”) who made the Project winning the First Award shall get one prize (hereinafter called ”First Prize”). Besides that the school of the Winner Team also gets a prize (hereinafter called ”School Prize”).

8.1.1. The First Prize is: vary from country to country. Please check the local websites!

8.2. The Team which wins the Audience Award (hereinafter called ”Audience Award Winner Team”) shall get one collective prize (hereinafter called ”Prize for Audience Award”).

8.3. Prizes listed in this section are collectively called Prizes of the Competition (hereinafter called "Prizes").

8.4. Organizer reserves the right to change the Prizes of the Competition.

8.5. The Prizes are non transferable and no cash alternative is available.

9. NOTIFICATION OF WINNERS, DELIVERY OF PRIZES, RIGHTS

9.1. Team Leaders of the two Winner Teams will be informed by e-mail within 3 (three) working days after the date of the Announcement of results by Organizer. Besides that, Organizer issues the name of Winner Team, the name of Audience Award Winner Team, and the name of their School in the feeds of Organizer’s Facebook fan page as well: (Please indicate here the full URL address of your local Facebook fan page.)

9.1.1. If Team Leader of Winner Team can not be contacted after three attempts of data reconciliation within 5 (five) working days after the date of the Announcement of results by Organizer, Team is no longer entitled to receive the First Award. In this case, the Team getting the second most points according to the judgement of Jury shall win the First Award.

9.1.2. If Team Leader of Audience Award Winner Team can not be contacted after 3 (three) attempts of data reconciliation within 5 (five) working days after the date of the Announcement of results by Organizer, Team is no longer entitled to receive the Audience Award. In this case, the Team getting the second most points during the online public voting shall win the Audience Award.

9.2. Prizes of Winner Team will be personally given to Team Leader on the Award Ceremony (hereinafter called ”Award Ceremony”) by Organizer. Team Leader is obliged to give Prizes to Team Members and the School.

9.3. The Prize of Audience Award Winner Team will be personally given to Team Leader on the Award Ceremony. Team Leader is obliged to give the Prize to Team Members.

9.4. The date and venue of the Award Ceremony: Please write here what is the planned date and venue of your local Award Ceremony.

9.4.1. If Winner Team or Team Leader can not take part in the Award Ceremony, Organizer ensure a pre-arranged date to deliver Prizes personally. If personal delivery is not possible due to any reasons, Organizer sends Prizes by post or courier company to an address arranged with Team Leader at the pre-arranged time.

9.5. As Team Members are minors (under the age of 18), Team Leader shall make legal representatives or guardians – in case of divorced parents the custodial parent – of each Team Member sign a consent form about the receipt of the prize prior to prize takeover.

9.6. If Team Leader and Team Members do not fully comply with these Rules and Regulations, they are not entitled to receive any prize.

9.7. Organizer reserves the right to change the date and venue of the Award Ceremony.

10. RESPONSIBILITY

10.1. Organizer is not responsible for the activities of Teams during the Competition. It is not Organizer’s task to supervise students while preparing the tasks.

10.1.1. Organizer is not responsible for accidents, injuries, and Teams’ property damage during the Competition, which happens due to lack of proper precautions.

10.1.2. Team Leaders are obliged to instruct their students the basic safety practices required in science laboratories. Team Leaders are also obliged to instruct their students the basic principles of health hazards of most secondary school science laboratories. Team Leaders must provide safety information and training to the students at every stage of experiment planning and be there to observe, supervise, instruct, and correct them during the experimentation.

10.1.3. It is the task of Team Leader that Team Members always comply with the Competition Safety Regulations (hereinafter called ” Safety Regulations”), which is included in the Annex 2 of this document, during the preparation period of the Competition and the entire implementation of the whole Project.

10.2. Organizer is not responsible for the quality of Prizes. If a winner demands to do so, the winner can prove quality problems to the manufacturer or the distributor of the certain Prize within a legal framework laid down by Please write here your country’s name.

10.3. Organizer is not responsible for the failure of the Website right out of Organizer’s control, during which period the Website is unavailable or limited in use, but Organizer immediately takes all necessary measures to ensure that the cause of the problem is revealed and solved as soon as possible. 

11. TAX INFORMATION

Liability for any applicable taxes imposed by any government, if any, on any Prize is the sole responsibility of Organizer. Organizer is under no further obligation to provide additional costs, after Organizer delivered the Prizes written above, and paid taxes imposed.

12. DATA PROTECTION

Data protection provisions concerning the Competition are included in Annex 1 of Rules and Regulations.

13. INFORMATION, HELP

If further problems or questions arise concerning the Competition in the period of the Competition, contact the Organizer for help.

14. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

14.1. Organizer reserves the right to revise or amend the Rules and Regulations or the Competition itself.

14.2. Organizer reserves the right to suspend, cancel or amend the Competition wholly or partly due to any technical, commercial or functional reasons. If the Competition is cancelled, Organizer intends to pre-publish the fact of cancellation.

2. SPHERE OF MANAGED DATA

2.1. Entry to the Competition is subject to the filled in online Entry form, in which the following information must be provided by Team Leader: Name of the school, Address of the school, Fantasy Name of Team, Name of Team Leader chemistry teacher, E-mail address of Team Leader chemistry teacher, Team Members (names of students).

2.1.1. As students (Team) between the age of 14 and 18 take part in the Competition, the adult Team Leader is the person who is entitled to register and to give data of Team Members (first name and second name) on behalf of the Team. Data controller is not allowed to use students’ data (names) for marketing and other purposes

2.3. By using this Website, the user's IP address, the start date and the end date of the visit may be recorded, and in some cases the type of the browser and the operation system, depending on the settings of the user's computer, by the so-called cookie, too. These data will be automatically logged by the system.

2.4. Concerning data used by data controller, Team Leader and Team Members are eligible for all entitlements defined in Paragraphs …… of Act …… of Law on Data of Public Interest and Personal Data Protection. Team Leader and Team Members can exercise any law enforcement before the court and may request assistance from the Data Protection Supervisor.

3. METHOD OF DATA MANAGEMENT

3.1. Provision of data is voluntary. Team Leader and Team Members shall note and expressly agree:

  • that in case of winning data controller may publish the name of the Team and the name of the School on the Internet and/or Facebook without any further conditions and compensation, concerning the Competition exclusively.
  • the provided personal data may be used by data controller for fulfilling data controller’s obligations set out in Rules and Regulations as well as for data controller’s own marketing activities and direct market research purposes (e. g. providing personalized user experience, internal record keeping, sending emails periodically to the provided e-mail addresses about the Website’s latest news and free newsletters containing other information etc.). An exception is the personal data of minors, see Section 2.1.1 of this Annex.
  • to cooperate in promoting the Competition and during the preparation of advertisements and other marketing materials concerning the Prize. This includes photographs and video recordings related to the Competition and the Prizes, and the publication of them in promotional materials related to the Competition and on Organizer’s Facebook fan page.

3.3. Data controller ensures that data management is in accordance with the applicable provisions of law.

3.3.1. Data controller may give personal information to a third party only with the prior approval and information of the providing party. This does not refer to possible data submissions required by law.

3.4. Whilst using the Website, data recorded in the log file are exclusively used for statistical objectives.

4. DURATION OF DATA MANAGEMENT

4.1. Team Leader and Team Members acknowledge that Organizer may preserve entry forms containing Team Leader’s name and contact information, data of the School, and names of Team Members for 5 years according to Act … of Law (required data management) in Organizer’s office, after which the data will be deleted.

5. DELETING PERSONAL DATA

5.1. Data controller provides possibility to Team Leader and Team Members at any time to inquire about management of Team Leader’s and Team Members’ personal data and to require their cancellation or amendment at the Organizer's e-mail address.

5.1.1. Data controller shall delete/amend data within five workdays after receiving the request on data cancellation/amendment.

5.1.2. Team Leader and Team Members acknowledge that if they require the cancellation of the data, which are necessary for the Competition before the date of the selection of winners, it may lead to immediate disqualification from the Competition.


Annex 2: Safety Regulations

 

1. GENERAL SAFETY

1.1. Teams participating in the Competition are only allowed to carry out physical and chemical experiments under the supervision of Team Leader. Do not try experiments at home!

1.2. During the experiments and the implementation of the task, Team Members are obliged to comply with the Safety Regulations of this Annex. If a Team Member violates any of these rules, it results in the immediate disqualification from the Competition.

2. CAREFUL USE OF EQUIPMENTS

2.1. All physical and chemical experiments require attention and caution. All equipments and tools have to be used in the proper way.

3. CHEMICAL SAFETY

3.1. Chemical safety standards of this Competition are based on the following acts:

3.1.1. REACH and CLP Regulations of EU in force about the use of chemicals.

3.1.2. … of Act … of Law on Chemical Safety of ...... in force.

3.2. The following provisions are mandatory for all Team Members taking part in the Competition.

Apparel in the Laboratory

  • Always wear appropriate eye protection (i.e., chemical splash goggles) in the laboratory.
  • Wear disposable gloves, as provided in the laboratory, when handling hazardous materials. Remove the gloves before exiting the laboratory.
  • Wear a full-length, long-sleeved laboratory coat or chemical-resistant apron.
  • Wear shoes that adequately cover the whole foot; low-heeled shoes with non-slip soles are preferable. Do not wear sandals, open-toed shoes, open-backed shoes, or high-heeled shoes in the laboratory.
  • Avoid wearing shirts exposing the torso, shorts, or short skirts; long pants that completely cover the legs are preferable.
  • Secure long hair and loose clothing (especially loose long sleeves, neckties, or scarves).
  • Remove jewelry (especially dangling jewelry).
  • Synthetic finger nails are not recommended in the laboratory; they are made of extremely flammable polymers which can burn to completion and are not easily extinguished.

General Work Procedure

  • Know emergency procedures.
  • Never work in the laboratory without the team leader chemistry teacher.
  • Do not engage in practical jokes or boisterous conduct in the laboratory.
  • Never run in the laboratory.
  • The performance of unauthorized experiments is strictly forbidden.
  • Never leave experiments while in progress.
  • Do not remove any equipment or chemicals from the laboratory
  • Notify your teacher of any sensitivity that you may have to particular chemicals if known.

Hygiene Practices

  • Keep your hands away from your face, eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals.
  • Food and drink, open or closed, should never be brought into the laboratory or chemical storage area.
  • Never use laboratory glassware for eating or drinking purposes.
  • Do not apply cosmetics while you are in the laboratory or storage area.
  • Wash hands after removing gloves, and before leaving the laboratory.
  • Remove any protective equipment (i.e., gloves, lab coat or apron, chemical splash goggles) before leaving the laboratory.

Emergency Procedure

  • Know the location of all the exits in the laboratory and building.
  • Know the location of the emergency phone.
  • Know the location of and know how to operate the following:
    • Fire extinguishers
    • Alarm systems with pull stations
    • Fire blankets
    • Eye washes
    • First-aid kits
    • Deluge safety showers
  • In case of an emergency or accident, follow the established emergency plan as explained by the teacher and evacuate the building via the nearest exit.
